Q: how tp setup samba and its requirement?

We are a group of beginners and have been struggling to setup local network
between out windows and linux systems.

I have never really delved into Samba, I do not really comprehend what
the use and purpose of Samba is. If anybody here who has used it could
explain I am open for a short lesson. Does the average linux user need
Samba? Why or why not? Who would, why?

If you have windows machines in your network, they'll use the services
of the Samba server.

The Linux machine runs Samba server to share its directories to windows
machines and they think they are connected to NT-servers. :)

If the Linux machine runs the Samba client, the windows machines let it
use their shares because they think it's another windows client. :)

This is a troll, not very good, though. I'm not that good at trolling
anything else than fish from the sea.
