The basic process involves installing smbclient and samba, then creating an smb.conf file to set up samba permissions, directory and printer shares. Fedora and Ubuntu both install smbclient by default, but I don't know about other distributions.
If all you need is to be able to connect to Windows shared resources from your Linux box, smbclient is all you need. Samba is the server daemon that allows a Linux machine to share its resources with Windows machines.
If you install samba and the samba documentation packages, you'll get examples of smb.conf files to work from. The Ubuntu system documentation includes a couple of complete books on Samba for reference, but again I don't know what distro you're running.
