Since the /boot drive in my original sequence still points to my old /boot drive in the / partition, shouldn't the 'find' command above still find stage1 in my old /boot drive rather than the area in the new partition ?

Looks like J.O. Aho answered some questions you had, I will assume so.

Yes, I was able to succeed using his method. The only thing I forgot was to change the paths in the grub config file, menu.lst, so that they were relative to the boot partition instead of the previous root partition. When my machine would not boot properly because those paths were incorrect, I was able to run the CD-ROM version of Mepis 6.0, mount the boot partition, and correct the menu.lst. After that everything worked perfectly.

Your advice was very good also. I am just glad I succeeded. There certainly are a number of pitfalls to watch out for.

My
piece of parting advice is to download and burn SuperGrub iso image;
because messing around with /boot and grub and your MBR could in theory
(reality?) cause you to have an unbootable system. SuperGrub will let you
boot your linux system even if you mess up what you plan to do, i.e.
SuperGrub could save your ass if things do not work out as you planned,
and let you still get into your linux Desktop, edit /etc/fstab and grub
config files if needed, etc.

I downloaded it, but it seems as if it only works as a replacement for whatever is in the MBR. Since I already have a reliable piece of software, System Commander 8.20, installed in the MBR, and since I have a boot CD-ROM for System Commander 8.20 in case anything messes up the MBR and I need to re-install System Commander 8.20, I do not see the need for the SuperGrub. But thanks for recommending it anyway.
