Try to use the USB cable instead, if you have CUPS enabled, then it should be able to detect the printer and you may get a bit better default settings suggested.

I am using CUPS (networked printer)

The "CUPS (networked printer)" makes people think you are using the printer over network, you connect the printer to computerA and print from computerB.

If you are referring to the software CUPS, you don't use the "(networked printer)", as CUPS stands for Common UNIX Printing System.

as the interface software as I have used that in
the past and it allows control of the printer through the CUPS webpage,
etc., and I hope to allow other printers on my home LAN at some point to
use the printer. I have used CUPS before with Mandriva linux no problem.

What options did you choose (all of them) when you configured the printer, not only the driver but device and so on.

It is so odd-- I can click to print a web page and the printer lights
blink and it even sounds like the printer drum rollers are going to print
the job, but nothing prints. I pulled out the paper tray, shuffled the
paper to be sure no paper jams, even hoped up the toner tray and
reinserted it. It acts like it wants to print, just nothing gets printer.

The HL2060 driver is supposed to work, but there are some issues.
There is another driver, which you can download from the Brother homepage, it may work better (or even worse) for you.
