removing firestarter from UBUNTU_6.06

Gents:

My first post to this NG.

Running:

GBvt600L / 2600+ / 0.75G / Ubuntu_6.06
DSL /l\ linksys router / bellsouth

I've recently updated a well_functioning UBUNTU_5.1 to v_6.06LT .
With this update came the firewall FireStarter_1.0.3 ...
autoinstalled
Too bad for me. Firestarter first malfunctioned -- by refusing to
allow ANY internet connection -- and then by not functioning at all. It
will not allow itself to be removed by either the Ubuntu package_manager
or by <apt-get remove ...>

Smells like something manual has to be done. How does one get rid of
malware like this?
