hi, i need a recommendation for a 600MHz compaq; I don't have an extra
Windows license so i'd like to use this to mess around with linux. Can
any of you recommend a distribution for a machine with the following

Processor: ........................ Intel Celeron processor - 600

System Bus: ........................................... 66 MHz system
bus
Cache: .................................... 128KB L2 Pipeline Burst

384MB PC100
Thanks!
IMHO it's a bit light for one of the heavyweight
desktops like Gnome or KDE - I think you'd be much happier with XFCE or
Enlightenment or any of the dozen or so other 'light' desktops. I'd
suggest you look at some Live CDs first - they will boot and run from the
CD without any installation needed, but have that ability as well. Suggest
you look at Elive (Enlightenment, Debian based) - Xubuntu (XFCE version of
Ubuntu), maybe FLUXbuntu (fluxbox version of Ubuntu). I'm not sure, but
knoppix may have the ability to boot various desktops.
FWIW I've installed Elive on a P166 with 64MB RAM and it runs 'decently'.
How much hard disk space? I find that 10gb or so is reasonable for a Linux
distro - perhaps you could install several different distros with a
variety of desktops for each one. distrowatch.com is your friend.
