Damn Small Linux (DSL) while one of the slimmer footprint distros, takes
only 50MB of space for linux and some installed apps including a music and
video player, text editor, Firefox, etc. Depending on your hard drive
size this would be one small distro to install leaving disc space for data
and for installing other apps (DSL is based on Knoppix, debian package
system so you could install other packages you want after the initial
install using 'sudo apt-get install somepackage')

No offense, but I really find DSL somewhat limiting compared to a more
fully featured distro like Elive. It has it's place, but I've not been
satisfied with it for an installed OS.
