hi, i need a recommendation for a 600MHz compaq;
....
I'd like to use this to mess around with linux.
Can any of you recommend a distribution for a machine
with the following specs:
Processor .... Intel Celeron processor - 600 MHz
....
Memory ....... 384MB PC100
I run two dinosaur age vintage 1999 Compaq Presario machines
that dual-boot with Windows and Debian GNU/Linux ....
cpq1 .....
os ..... Debian Sarge / Win98_SE
cpu .... 250 MHz Cyrix MII
mem .... 192 MB
hdd .... /dev/hda .... 4 GB .... Win98_SE
/dev/hdb .... 30 GB .... Debian Sarge
cpq2 .....
os ..... Debian Etch / Win2K
cpu .... 350 MHz AMD K6
mem .... 224 MB
hdd .... /dev/hda .... 4 GB .... Win2K
/dev/hdd .... 4 GB .... Debian Etch
Debian Sarge was installed on cpq1 in July 2004
and has been running fine since ....
Debian Etch was installed on cpq2 in early December 2006
and has been running fine since ....
I do use the KDE desktop environment on both of these boxes
in spite of their slow cpus and low memory footprints and
find that KDE itself seems to perform quite well ....
e.g. menus open quickly and the auto-hide kicker panel/taskbar
also functions well ....
The only real drawback that I have on both of these old boxes
is that some applications are s l o w to open initially but
once opened seem to perform as well as can be expected for
machines of this low caliber ....
For example opening Firefox, Thunderbird, or Opera initially
can take 25-30 seconds but once loaded all are pretty much
lightening quick ....
Initially opening a Konsole shell window or the Kate editor
takes about 10-12 seconds ....
I've experimented quite a bit with other lightweight window managers
( Enlightenment, Fluxbox, IceWM, XFCE, Wmaker, etc. ) on my Debian
Sarge box and also find the same slow behavior when opening some
applications ....
So I tend to open a few apps at the beginning of a session
and tolerate the slowness in opening at that point and then
minimize them until needed ....
Your 600 MHz processor with 384 MB of mem should probably
run well with Debian Linux or any Debian-based distribution ....
Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Simply Mepis, etc.
A very strong + for considering a Debian-based distribution
is the usage of the apt package management system that
makes installing new software and/or updating your system
very easy and there is a huge repository of software
available to draw from ....
A good way to start is to get a few Live CDs
and experiment a bit before committing to a
final install ....
