Some distributions don't recognize the emulated DEC 21140 network interface.
Many emulated interfaces may need their own driver which should come with the emulation program.
I'm sure one could rebuild a distribution to do what I want...If I knew
anything about linux. I need to find it already configured.
Suggestions?
Let him play with LiveCD instead of having an installed version on the machine, that way he will be back on a working "installation" each time he boots up GNU/Linux.
The problem with live cd's is that I can't find one that runs "out of the box" on any of my systems, much less figure out what's happening on
HIS system 2000 miles away. Two major problems I find are networking, especially wireless networking, and soundcard support including mp3 codecs.
Wireless is a tricky part in GNU/Linux, as specifications about hardware is limited and none of the manufacturers makes drivers, IBM based wireless are best supported and for the rest you almost need to use ndiswrapper which uses the driver for microsoft under GNU/Linux fro x86.
For Sound card support, you should check www.alsa-project.org, much works, there are some exceptions among newer cards.
Mp3 codecs is not included in some distros due the license, but can easily be added afterwards.
In our latest drama, some magazine directed him to download ubuntu.
He stuck the CD into his winXP system and clicked something that installed ubuntu rendering his system unbootable, Grub error 21.
This error is widely reported on the web, but solutions have not been
available.
The --force-lba had been needed to be used during install of grub and of course if selecting the wrong option during install you will the GNU/Linux take over the whole hard drive.
I REALLY like this emulation thing for experimenting and keeping him out
of trouble. I just need to find a linux distribution that supports
Virtual PC 2007 out of the box.
As it seems to have issues (may be deliberately included by microsoft), you should try another, so go with Mr Styvels suggestion.
A third option is to use CygWin, that installs the GNU tools into a microsoft environment, kind of having Unix running inside the microsoft, if the CygWin stuff gets ruined, the system will still work.
No comments about CygWin? think it's the best option for you.
