Resolution and refresh rate

Hi All,

I am trying to install "Backtrack-Linux" on a spare
system but it has an old monitor which cannot handle the
default "backtrack" settings.
So I end up with three blurred pictures on my screen :-(.
How can I adjust the screen / monitor settings to a lower
resolution and even more important a lower refresh rate?

( I won't even ask why linux developers don't use a fail
save setting to start with! ).

.
