Unlike Windows, Linux does not HAVE to flourish, and does not have to
cater itself to the clueless. Windows is "for profit." Linux is not.
I run Windows 2000. Windows does not have to be an open door to viruses
and malware. It only takes a little common sense. You use Firefox instead
of IE, use a firewall, and stay away from shady places. I haven't had any
malware for over 5 years now, don't use any anti-virus software, and
don't ever worry about malware of any kind. I wouldn't run Windows XP if
paid to, and wouldn't consider running Vista if Bill Gates wanted to make
me a partner. W2K was the best version of Windows, and will never be
equalled again by the evil empire of Redmond. The best they can do now is
add bloat and gadgetry to what once was a lean OS.
Windows really is an OS for idiots, but someone with just an iota of
common sense, and a little computer savvy can run it just fine with no
problems. Why am I experimenting with Linux, then? Because I would really
like to be independent of Microsoft, since I don't like their business
practices and MO. I like the idea of freeware and open source software. I
also like being different. I like experimenting. Windows has taken away
all the DIY element from computing. I enjoyed running MS-DOS 3.3, using
the command line, programming in BASIC, etc. Windows has made me a lazy
person. I don't like that.
I won't completely desert Windows until I can do everything I want to do
in Linux, but I have already made strides in that direction. And, I'm
having a hell of a lot of fun in the process.
