Hardware detection has been miserable. I don't give a damn if it's 95%
perfect if it doesn't detect MY hardware. And I'm not trying to stress
the system. I'm deliberately trying to use middle of the road hardware
that some, but not all distro's support. I've even downgraded my
hardware in an attempt to be linux compliant.

I just custom built a new video surveillance server (VSS) running Fedora
Core 6 x86_64 and ZoneMinder compiled on the 64-bit Linux for a client.
System specs: motherboard is a K9N4 Ultra-F by MSI with nVidia chipset and
built-in gigabit NIC, a second Netgear GA311 gigbit NIC, MSI NX6200TC
PCI-Ex video card (nVidia G-Force 6 chipset there too), AMD 64-bit
processor, 2GB RAM, Western Digital 40GB IDE boot drive, Seagate 750GB
SATA II storage drive to keep up to 90 days of stored video, etcetera.

My point? Other than making sure the motherboard and NIC chipsets provide
Linux support I did no special research. Everything worked (caveat: I did
not try the sound as a VSS does not /need/ sound ... but I would bet it
works too). This is using all brand-new hardware some of which is on the
market for less than 6 months. No need to use "downgraded" hardware.

If /your/ hardware does not provide Linux support then that is the fault of
the hardware manufacturer *NOT* Linux. If I find hardware that will not
work in our custom built Linux systems then I write the manufacturer and
stop using their hardware until THEY fix the problem. I highly recommend
all other Linux users adopting the same attitude. :-)
