Re: Making Linux Easy for Newbies

<snip>
Its called security, I know its a foreign concept to the Windows
monoculture.

A somewhat less than helpful and condescending comment.
Also irrelevant and not condusive to giving a noob the feeling
that he is welcome to the group. I donno, perhaps he's not.

That said, it is VERY easy to enable root, all you needed
to do was ask. You found this group to complain, why couldn't you find it
to ask questions?

In reality, I did seek and receive help. I refer you to the thread in this
group titled "UbuntuCE and root login question". When I found out from
some nice folks that the distro has a most inconvenient way to gain root
privileges I gave up on it. Now, Perhaps if "gave up" offends you, feel
free to subsitute "deemed it unsuitable". Perhaps you should do your
homework before you assume the worst of someone, I.E. assuming that I had
not asked.

<snip>

You didn't look very hard. There are plenty. You either don't have your
repositories configured correctly
or your search skills are
lacking, based on this post, I am thinking its the latter. My Synaptic lists over
1100 development packages of varying languages and interfaces.

I can't comment on my search skills. I've never consisdered what metrics
to look at for such an evaluation.

<snip>
Now this is getting silly, Am I really
that stupid?

No, but you are seriously lacking in the tenacity department.

Tenacity can be a admirable attribute, but when one has the pressures of a
deadline to meet, it can easily serve to increase the chances of missing
that deadline. GOD forbid, but when you have finished a 5 year long battle
with cancer as I have just done, then you might be qualified to lecture me
on tenacity.

<snip>

Well, sometime in middle of all that, In order to actually get the
thing done, I gave up and decided to use an "embedded PC"

Every attempt ends with, I finally gave up, not a good sign.

I refer you back to my comments on deadlines and such.

<snip>

You could have EASILY installed the MS fonts if you had only asked. It
amazes me how people can write hundreds of words to bitch about
something they don't understand rather than 20 words to ask a question.

Again, I refer you back to the concept of deadlines and time constraints.

<snip>

The bottom line line is, No Linux is not so easy to use for noobies

Neither is Windows, you've been using it for who knows how many years
and you've forgotten that you had to learn to use it as well. There are
posts all over Usenet of newbies with NO programming experience that
have successfully installed and use Linux every day *raises hand*

This thread was not about Windows, but about making Linux easier for new
users. If case you didn't notice, This post was sent running Pan under
Linux. Yes, It couldn't have been easier to install. Much faster than a
Windows install, but back to the original point of my post. I couldn't use
it as it was installed and I did not have the luxury of playing with it
for months to learn enough about it do what I wanted to do.
Unfortunately, for now at least, Linux will remain a curiosity and
something fun to play with.

<snip>

More and more HW manufactures join up every day.

All I know about that is that I only encountered 2 hardware problems after
installing Mepis. Pretty good I'd say, but neither manufacturer offers a
driver for Linux.

<snip>

What you are too old to remember is that you have to start somewhere and
you weren't born using windows or dos either.

Now, did you have a question?

No, this thread was not a search for the answer to a specific question.
I only entered it to provide some insight into what a noobie faces upon
entering the Linux world.

Your response is like me giving you a hard time for "giving up" and buying
a scoreboard instead of designing and building your own. After all, it's
really very easy to do once you've done it. All you have to do is design a
multiplexed display, maybe write some microcode to drive the said display,
design and RF interface so there won't be any wires hanging off of it,
design a combo power supply/battery charger, and design a remote
controller for it. The remote should be pretty easy, you already know
Linux.
Building it is also easy, once you've done it. Just 2 or 3 circuit
boards to lay out, a few hundered solder joints to make, a dozen or so
wires to hook up, and a little bit woodworking for the cabnet. Heck you
got 2 or 3 months to get it done. What's the problem, don't you have the
tenacity? All you have to do is ask!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist, but maybe you get the point.

Anyway, now that my project is completed, I have the luxury to explore
Linux, and hey, I'm pretty tough skinned, I might even ask a question or
two.

Mike
