Here's an update to my original post:

Out of the blue, I'm getting odd behavior when I 'ping' any site. Specifically, NOTHING happens after the initial response. For example:
# ping latimes.com
PING latimes.com (63.241.84.101) 56(84) bytes of data.
<< major snippage >>
Per some of the replies, I did try talking to Earthlink about this. I actually THOUGHT it was going well after they said:
"EarthLink will not block any ports or sites, so the issue is
not with blocking."
But then realized they were clueless when they said:
"Have you tried clearing your browser's cache and deleting cookies?"
Yeah, right. I asked, "WHAT does that have to do with using 'ping' from a Linux command line?" After that, we went nowhere.
*I* am really clueless right now. One reply said to ask Earthlink about my MTU size; that reply came after I'd had my [fruitless] chat with Earthlink, so it didn't get asked. Another suggested:
"iptables -F
iptables -X
try these commands and if u r using any version of FC...add another
command as
seervice iptables stop"
As I noted in my original post, I'm using Ubuntu, not Fedora. At any rate, I did try the two 'iptables' commands (above), but to no avail.
I'm at a complete loss right now and would appreciate any other thoughts, hypotheses, suggestions, etc. as to how to fix this. I will try asking Earthlink about the MTU issue, but it's so frustrating talking to them...I just want to put it off as long as possible. So if there's anything ELSE you can think of that might be worth a shot, please let me know.
I appreciate the replies so far!
