Okay, the mystery deepens. After reading this, I fired up my ADSL modem's web configurator interface--which I hadn't done in over six months--and found the following line checked:
"Ping traffic is blocked from the WAN / LAN"
So...I unchecked it and, voila!, ping is back! :)
Now, please, before everybody starts laughing their asses off...hear me out. I have NOT touched my modem's settings since July when I set it up. I couldn't even remember its fucking password, for heaven's sake. And there is NO ONE else who has access to my computer system, my modem's settings, etc. Okay, I know what you're thinking. And that's alright! Believe me, if one of my end-users came to me and said, "REALLY! I didn't change a thing! It just stopped working all by itself!" I wouldn't believe them, either. But I really have NOT changed, or even accessed, my modem's settings since last July, so I cannot explain this.
