Getting TV working with ATI AIW

I'm trying to watch TV on an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 9600 XT. I'm running Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy).
What I've learned so far seems to be that this is not simple because ATI refuses to support the TV features of their cards on Linux. Nevertheless I SHOULD be able to watch TV.
My salvation is supposed to be GATOS, but I can barely make heads or tails of the scraps of "instructions" that are available about how to get it working.
Here's what I did so far:
Installed GATOS using Adept.
Installed xawtv using Adept.
Is that supposed to be it? xawtv refuses to start if I launch it from the menu,. From the console, I can see it spitting out this:
This is xawtv-3.95, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.17-10-generic)
can't open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
no video grabber device available
What should I do now? I found a few posts describing nearly identical problems, but no solutions. I don't want to go back to XP on this machine, but not having TV would be a deal-breaker here.
Any help is appreciated.
