Ok those of you that know me know I use linux but recently have had to
explore MS software and likely will have to use some MS software on a
special workstation PC I am setting up for filmmaking-- video editing,
music composing, etc. Well today I went out and bought some MIDI music
recording/editing software "CakeWalk" is the company. Oh man this software
really irks me! This is RETAIL software I paid $40 for at Best Buy; ok, so
I install it only to find out that I *must* register the software online
with the company that made it within 30 days or it will cease to function?
WTF? You gotta be kidding?! I paid for it, and now I have to give up my
privacy and give out my telemarketing/spam contact info to this sheister
company even though I prefer not to and I have PAID already for this
software? This is a first. I am going to try to return the software. Chalk
up an angry customer-- another great reason to stick with open source when
possible. I feel abused already by this software company. This blows!
This is common in the "paid for" software world. They can only ever see a
revenue stream based on sales - not that it really is a sale; you're
*leasing* the rubbish, just as you are with Windows.
Examine the EULA for Windows, and it's *really* *scary* - you have *no*
*rights* to your privacy. By agreeing to the EULA (by opening the
shrink-wrap or clicking "Yes" on a pre-install), you have given MS
unlimited access to the contents of your computer.
By implication, this also applies to any other company that has installed
software on your machine, and /in/ /theory/ is a protection for malware
authors - you've "allowed" their "software" on to your computer, so they
have MS EULA rights to the data there (including passwords and bank
details)....
