Don't feel bad two007a, early in my linux usage i made a similar mistake,
being so used to the MS-Windows GUI. I saw a magazine add that had
instructions such as to run this command
# ls
so I of course faithfully typed in '# ls' not realizing that "#' was the
system command prompt provided to me when in root administrator mode! $
and # are command prompts provided by the terminal console program,
you do not type $ or #, rather only what follows them.
