I have recently installed the most recent version of Ubuntu and am in

I too use Ubuntu (6.10) for my main linux distro, I find it exceptional
for ease of use and USB device recognition. The support forums specific to
ubuntu are also invaluable.
My question is about maintaining Linux. I have automatic
update enabled and have installed ClamAV and run a full system scan on
a weekly basis. Do I have to worry about Spyware etc and do I have to
run a Chkdsk tool and defragmenter on the hard drive to keep things
running smoothly. Thanks in advance for any replies.
One thing about auto update to be mindful of-- if you install the nvidia
drivers from nvidia.com as I do rather than use the ubuntu nv drivers,
should you have an nvidia card, the update may at times update xorg and
thus invalidate your nvidia driver module, meaning you would have to then
reconfigure your nvidia driver manually again.
Defragmentation is not an issue with linux as with Windows, that is my
understanding. Spyware, viruses? Not hardly as much an issue with linux--
just be mindful of what you download and install as with Windows,
especially as root (admin). Virus detection software for linux is more
useful for scanning for viruses on MS-WIndows partitions-- which these
days does become an issue with dual boot systems where data might even be
shared on a FAT32 partition between Windows and Linux.
