Put in a CD of knoppix or ubuntu (download and burn iso for free, or
Ubuntu will mail you a CD for free). Boot up or reboot your computer. See
if your display (monitor) works ok, if your mouse or touchpad works, if
you have internet, if your printer is detected, etc. I recommend the
Ubuntu, but Knoppix is also known to detect hardware very nicely. Ubuntu
is easier to install and use though, IMHO, and Ubuntu has nice support
forums.
