Anybody here using a linux PC desktop with 10 or more GB of RAM, and if so
what motherboard? My current system maxes out at 4GB, has an Athlon 64 X2
dual core 4000+ cpu. But I sense I might need more, especially RAM, like
10GB or more, at least 8GB. Maybe even more to quadcore cpu. Any
suggestions on what works for linux compatibility with such a high end
system?
Most of those motherboards are made for desktop environment and 4GB is quite much for most gamers, even if vista is released you don't need more than 1GB for the "OS" itself and 3GB for application works fine.
If you are lucky at eBay, you can find a nice Ultra Enterprice 4500 (supports up to 14 CPUs and 14GB Ram), this is a real 64bit system.
If x86 is important for you, you can looks at other Sun machines like the Sun Ultra 40 Workstation (supports two Opterons and 32GB Ram).
Real computers costs a bit more than those you get from your local dealer. :P
