It takes a lot more time to boot linux than win XP.

Nope. It doesn't.

*Every* Linux distro I've tried takes more than a minute to boot. WinXP,
about 20 seconds. (And yes, this is on the same machine.) XP boots up in
about a third of the time of Linux.

A folder full of photos in Linux (thumbnail view enabled) opens at least
as
quick and possibly quicker than a folder in XP with thumbnails enabled.

Wrong. Did you even try this?

All programs take more time to open in linux as
under windows, why isn't it allowed to say so,
it is a very simple fact?

No it's not. A fact is a truth. You either have a very poorly installed
version of Linux or you are simply making it up.

Konqueror takes more time to open than Explorer, Firefox takes *way* longer
to open than IE. These are facts.

I also want Linux to improve because I love the concept of open-source, but
there's not going to be any improvement if the problems are just ignored.
I've heard the "Linux is faster than Windows" line many times - I have no
idea where it comes from.

Maybe if someone's running a custom-compiled optimized kernel and using some
weird geeky text-based browsers and whatnot, then it's faster, but
out-of-the-box, using standard GUI apps, Linux is definitely slower.
