*Every* Linux distro I've tried takes more than a minute to boot. WinXP,
about 20 seconds.

That is one fast system you have there. My stop watch says 33 seconds
from boot to where I can move mouse to click Start button. System is
not up though. It is still working and does not respond to the click
on the Start button at that time.

Starting the instant I hit Enter having selected Windows in GRUB,

my stopwatch says 24 seconds when I see the desktop.

At this point the hard drive is still showing lots of activity, but I can
move the mouse (no stuttering), and click the start menu (which comes up
instantly). During the test I navigated the start menu and selected IE. It
came up instantly. It did *not* load the default page immediately. It did
that at 37 seconds. (At this exact moment I also got the security warning
pop-up). At 54 seconds all hard drive activity ceases.

Starting the instant I hit Enter having selected Kubuntu in GRUB,

I see nothing for 8 seconds. Then the loading screen comes up and lasts
until 34 seconds.

from 34 to 44 seconds, my LCD monitor shows an "out of range" message
(that's also a problem that needs to be fixed). Then I see a light-blue
screen followed by another loading screen which lasts until 1:02 at which
point I can see the desktop and do whatever I want.
