Hi Pete,
There's a good site called the Linux Distribution Chooser located at
http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/index.php?select_lang=true which,
while not a definitive solution for choosing your distro, might offer
some tips and tricks on what distro to try first.
On a personal note I'd suggest Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 - you'll find that the
newest one (Edgy) is 6.10, and believe me, 6.10 really is the mutt's
nuts, but 6.06 does possess a few advantages over 6.10 that might be
critical for you:
1. Canonical (the company that finances the whole operation) sends out
6.06 CDs for free - although they do take a few weeks. You can keep one
for yourself and give the rest to friends. There's nothing like having a
few friends on-hand to learn Linux with.
2. It's a so-called Long Term Support release, which means it is
supported for three years (actually another two now). Added to this,
while it doesn't offer the most recent programs, it is extremely stable
and I imagine it will be fine for most of what you want.
You can also have a gander at http://www.distrowatch.org and Wikipedia
offers a page with some comparisons at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_linux_distributions which let
you see if either a paid of free version might be for you to begin with.

Would like to move toward Linux. What is the absolute easiest distro to use?
The easiest would be the best way for me to start.
Yes, of course, I am willing to learn. :-)
