What I think I need is a local college course in basic linux.

My Ubuntu and Fedora systems installed without any problems, getting an
IP address from my router's DHCP service. All I had to do was point and
click and explore. No course required. YMMV of course.

BTW, what IS the hardest part if not the installation of new software?

If things don't go 100% smoothly then you may have to resort to the
command line to get things working. This is getting more and more rare
though. I remember the old days when I lived at the command prompt. :)

Note that Linspire "CNR" specifically overcomes this.

On my Ubuntu and Fedora systems I just go to Add/Remove Software and
choose the software from the list (Ubuntu is slightly better and easier
in this regard IMHO). It's not as pretty as C 'n' R but just as easy.
