That is what I did - first was at 35-40x (to a CD-R). Then again a 4x to a
CD-RW. Same error msg.
How would I determine the checksum? Nothing that I could find/see relating
to this.
Going to dwnld again this evening - try over again. Maybe better to just
simply buy a Lynux set from someone!

I dwnld'd Ubunto 6.10. Burned a disk from dwnld'd iso file, then booted
w/this disk. Two error msgs:
- invalid compressed format
- Kernel Panic - not syncing: vfs: unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block
(1,0)
What did I fail to do? (Assumed that the disk was a "run from this
isk" -or- it would instruct me what/where to install.
I have NOT set up any partitions for this OS.
Dumber than dumb -or- I missed a point -or- something else is happening
as
advised by error msg.

Tks Lew!Yes, current distros are MUCH more easy.
I found SuSE 7.1 on the shelf - a bit old I suppose. But being NEW to
Linux, will it matter?
Go in the newspapersshop around your corner, get an actual Ubuntu CD and
you
will have much more fun.
If you have a good Internet flatrate you may download it as well.
Sounds like you may have a corrupted download, or possibly a cd that is
trying to write too fast. If there are md5sum's for the iso in question
check and see if the iso md5sum equals the ones stated on the download
site. If not download it again. You might also try to reburn the iso to
cd at a slower burning speed. Quite a few cd's get corrupted just trying
to write at the max speed available. Fast is not always good.
