It is possible however, to continue with OE and windows using VM methods
if you need to. And of course there is dual boot anyway.

This application runs in wine/crossover, it uses up a lot less resources than
running a virtual machine.

I have a router at home with 2 PCs connected to it. My wife will
continue to use XP on her machine, but if I switch to Linux, another
concern of mine is transferring files to each other on our home network.

There is samba for GNU/Linux, which allows you to share files with microsoft
boxes.

As soon as convenient in your machine, consider adding a fat32
partition, this can be easily used to transfer files between linux and
windows on your machine. There are methods of writing into ntfs from
linux but there are some caviats. It is easy for linux to read files
from ntfs into linux.

This depends on which driver used to enable the ntfs support in GNU/Linux, the
one in the kernel can cause corruption, while the ntfs3g driver is all okey to
use without worries.
