GAIM froze system



I am a beginner unable to get rid of GAIM. Here is the exact error
message:

"Cannot remove 'gaim' One or more applications depend on gaim. To remove
gaim and the dependent applications, use the Synaptic package manager."


I POSITIVELY HATE a messy system will somebody PLEASE help a beginner.
What is the easiest way? In MS Windows I would simply uninstall then
reinstall. That is not possible here.
