How do I configure a sound card?

I am very new to DSL and so far I love it because it works great with
my old laptop I just bought. When I found out how to create a ext2
partioion it was easy from their. Curently I do comp repair for
windows. The laptop has win98, winxp, and DSL. But the DSL has no
sound. I searched and found a program called Yast2 but when I click
install it says I'm missing a gettext. I tried installing a gettext
copy from the internet but then it says i don't have a compatable c-
compiler. I don't know anything about these installation files for
linux. the only thing I know is that a .tar and .gz are like zip files
and that a sh is like an .exe I guess. Is there anyone who knows a
simpler way to configure my sound card or has some insight for newbies
to linux?
