If a laptop:
Download and burn an iso image of gparted. It is a bootable linux
distro that excels at repartitionining and resizing your hard drive if
you need to do so on say a laptop.
Desktop PC:
Most of us here (I suspect) recommend you dedicate a separate hard
drive (20gb or larger) to linux, keep your WinXP on its own drive.
During the linux install, the linux installer will set up a bootloader
like grub or lilo to let you dual boot whatever operating systems you
have on your computer, and you can then choose which to boot by
default.
