Virtual PC sucks. We tried to use it at work for a while and found it's

nicely. I've used VMPlayer and VMWare server. Both work well. VMPlayer
is simpler and limits you to running one VM at a time. VMWare server is
a bit more elaborate, it allows you to control VM instances on local and
remote machines (very nice). Both are downloadable for no charge.

You're right I got confused and said Virtual PC, but I should've said
VMWare.

When you say that VMPlayer limits you to one VM at a time, what do you
mean? You have to stop one OS and start the next? How is that advantageous
over just rebooting to a new OS?

Basically it means that you shutdown a virtual machine before starting
another virtual machine. VMWare server allows you to run multiple VM's at
the same time. In my case I occassionally have 4 VM's open at the same
time. Another limitation of VMPlayer is that it does not allow you create
new VM's. You can work around that by creating VM's using other tools,
there's info on the web about it. VMWare server allows you to create new
VM's.

Xen sounds good, it takes advantage of the built in hardware
virtualization capabilities in new processors. It's still pretty young
(they're still adding features in the Linux kernel to support it). I'd
like to play with it, but it would have to prove it's stability before I
would consider replacing my VMWare VM's.

I understand that VMware also uses the hardware these days. Also is VMware
free for personal use? I had heard that they came up with a free for
personal use plan.

Yes, VMWare player and server are available without charge.
