beryl gnome title bars gone, solved.

I have installed beryl on fedora core 6 with the emerald theme manager
and I must admit, it is pretty darned cool. I did try compiz on fedora 5
before moving on to fedora 6 (That is another story in itself, lost my
/boot partition on a crash and thought that an upgrade to fc6 would fix
that, it didn't. Thanks aho for helping with that, btw.), so now it is
beryl with emerald on gnome.

I have an nvidia card, FX5500 and use the latest nvidia drivers. It was
all so cool and actually useful this time, that zoom feature on websites
with tiny fonts is a blessing, the rotating cube is pretty cool with
skydome turned on, negative image is easy to do, great for those stupid
mypace pages where the user thinks that everything black and dark is
real neat. Overall, I am pretty impressed. Not hard to install or setup
with yum either, plenty of docs on google for that.

Problem was that I could not for the life of me get that darned emerald
theme manager to put title bars on windows so you cannot grab them,
cannot shade, minimize, maximize, instantly close, etc., without right
clicking on the deskbar. Very annoying. I googled all over the place,
modified my xorg.conf to death, make sure default 24 bit color, a few
other lines were necessary, but still, no window decorations on
new nautilus windows, terminal, or hardly anything else but for a dialog
box that says "Do you really want to quit?".

Yet, I would click a video, mplayer would open the flick, had window
decorations on it. What was the freaking problem? I log out of x, startx
again, and I did have one nautilus window open and must've saved the
session that way and that was the only window that would decorate. Gave
up, exited and came back as a new user, tried it out with kde, worded
flawlessly. Impressive. (lisa don't work worth a dam, how do you get that
thing to show your window shares anyway?) So beryl cannot be the
problem.

I log out and go back as root, create an account for the cat, (I like
webmin for that stuff) but she gets a z shell, not what I had in mind, I
go back and give her bash. Now we run missy and give her a gnome desktop
and guess what? Everything works, perfectly! No problem with any window
decorations at all. Even ditching emerald did not give me title bars
anymore, beryl took them away. Googled like hell for two days, found a
lot of chatter about this, but I already did all that stuff with the new
drivers and the xorg.conf so I have a new problem.

Now I know that beryl, beryl-manager, and emerald work quite well with
fc6, I delete my ~/.beryl directory, startx, and guess what? Yep, it all
works right now. Solved. I must've played around too much with the beryl
manager, or saved sessions, and beryl remembers that stuff. So just to
help anyone else out that is going nuts with this, try as a different
user that has not used beryl before (Create one if necessary.) and if it
works good there, delete your ~/.beryl directory and log back into x
again. Hope this helps.
