Anybody here tried the Ubuntu 6.10 to Ubuntu 7.04 upgrade as available
via the notification icon? I have always done fresh installs when I
used to use other distros, but Ubuntu has been so user friendly as a
rule I was thinking maybe, just maybe, I could have it (apt-get/
synaptic) do the upgrade automagically, see what happens. I am going
to have to reinstall my nvidia driver anyhow, e.g. after such an
upgrade, in preparation for installing Beryl. Thoughts?

Yes.

One thing I would suggest is turning off beryl. The NVidia driver will
need to be addressed, especially if you've installed off the Nvidia
site itself. Also, make a backup of Xorg.conf so you can compare what
the upgrade does to it (the upgrade Xorg 7.2 can cause some people
problems). Re-install Beryl again from the repositories rather than via
any "third-party" instructions.

7.04 handles the restricted headers and Nvidia driver in a slightly
different way to Edgy. It uses a restricted devices manager that will
always match up the driver with the kernel headers automagically.
However, it is *different* and therefore it confuses quite a few
upgraders.

There are other things that may not work afterwards, things such as
NVU, that ubuntu have dropped becuase of Linspire's sponsorship (I
would guess). There are also likely to be a few other software packages
that you *may* use that may not be there afterwards.

Apart from that though, I would go for it. Most folk have upgraded
without any issue at all. You're backed up adequately aren't you?
