Bad picture taking session

I have 50 someodd pictures I took this morning. They were shot inside a gym with only enough light to see what we were doing. Not for taking photos.

As you can see, not much contrast because of the long distance between camera and subject.
Is there any way to improve on these pictures in a batch method with Gimp? Or other software?
