My mother has a laptop that's around 3 years old now. She has always
used Windows XP, and after a few months it becomes bloated and I have
to reinstall it. Today, after backing up all her files, I told her I'm
going to try something new on her laptop; Linux. I told her it was
different to Windows and it will be faster and won't suffer as much
bloating over time as Windows did. I reassured her if she didn't like
Linux, I could always run the XP CD and have her laptop back as it was
before within a few hours. She's agreed and so far doesn't mind
Linux :]
Anyone who says Linux is harder to use than Windows certainly haven't
seen a lot of the more modern distros targeted to be usuable for the
not-so-literate computer users, like Mandrake and Ubuntu.
I help a few elderly friends with their technology. I found that windows needed too much looking after and for example, an 85 year old friend was happy to use linux on my recommendation. That was 2 years ago now. He uses email and internet (kmail and firefox), no problems at all. And I know that the configuration will not change between my - rare- visits!
