I am a newbie. Ubuntu I can work with very well. However, the later
edition does not work on my hardware. Can some one offer me a (serious
and unbiased) opinion about a second choice? It needs to be graphical,
hardware friendly (an older Dell), easy to use like Ubuntu was. Thanks.

In a word - Debian. If you have a high speed connection to the Net get
the "netinstall" CD and use boot option "installgui". I just moved us
off Ubuntu to Debian - yesterday (4/28). Used the netinstall CD and
boot option "installgui". It was as easy as Ubuntu to install but, and
get this!, MP3 & DVD (non-US) playing support was already in ... added
only one file: libdvdcss2 (keep a copy in my folder). I always had to
jump thru hoops on Ubuntu to get all the mad* files, etc. installed
to be where I am already. Read more at http://tinyurl.com/2loyhbI
I'll give Debian a look!
