Re: Eye Candy (was Re: Beryl -- can it be installed with apt-get / synaptic?)

On 2007-04-29, Stefan Patric <tootek2@xxxxxxxxx> rambled on thusly:

But does it improve or add additional functionality to the desktop or
system. Or is Beryl, as well as other 3D desktops, just cpu cycle
eating, resource wasting "eye candy?"

Depends on how you use your computer, of course. Some of beryl's effects
are pure eye candy (e.g. the wobbly windows). But some are quite useful.
And even the pure eye candy parts have their function (for example, bell in
a window causes that window to shake: this makes it easy to figure out
which window the bell's coming from if one has a lot of windows open).

Some are very useful: The screen zoom effect can be a godsend if there's
one little bit of text that you need enlarged for just a second or two.
The live preview of minimized apps reduces the amount of time it takes to
locate the button on the taskbar, the live preview on the app switcher
(ALT+TAB) is amazingly well done, as is the Expose-ish app finder.

And, of course, having truly transparent windows allows one to layer an app
that requires input over a window that displays the required data.
