My use for really old hardware is for firewall, print server and so
on. I had an old P90 in a cupboard (closet - US) in my office, to
which I added an extra ethernet port and two more printer ports. It
now runs "headless" as a network print server - total cost <?20 for
the two extra ISA cards and about 1 hour of my time to install and
configure.
I have another headless old clunker running "Smoothwall" (or whatever
it's called this week) for a firewall.

Yep, that makes decent sense. I really don't run many printers but will
save the advice. Fixing TV sets sure ain't making much money these days so
an additional skill is always good to have. I might setup some test
systems. Thanks.
