Ray,
Truth be told, Linux is super easy now a days, esp. compared to the
first release of RedHat I tried -IMHO. I loaded Debian Etch and had
to do nothing to it to be functional as an OS. I did choose to
add some items, exactly four files: liblame0, lame, mad-gstreamer-lame
(MP3 support), and lidvdcss2 (DVD playing). That was easy !
Just to add 2 cents....I agree Linux is a new challenge and can be a
great learning experience. I am by trade a Novell and MS admin with
some Linux under my belt as well. One thing I would say to the
people that say the MS just works is "Let me give you a naked box,
with no driver discs, no clue exactly what hardware is really in
the box and a WindowsXP setup CD and lets see how far you get along
before your are just as exasperated as you would be with trying to
setup up Linux on the same box". In all reality most Linux distros
do a pretty darn good job of detecting hardware and picking the
right drivers for it. Windows XP in and of itself is pretty stupid
about doing the same thing if you don't have a handful of driver
discs sitting on the table when you start to do the setup.
Jim, that was interesting and brought to mind doing all those things
just to "get" it going when I last used Windows (98). Based on what
you've stated, I see things haven't improved all that much during the
intervening period with that OS.
The above comment reminds me of how I got started with Linux. Win98's
repeated failures caused me to research what this Linux stuff was
about. I started out with Mandrake 6.x from a magazine & was
completely mystified about how to get it to work.
I persevered and found out that I could do all sorts of neat things
that I couldn't do in Windoze. The more I learned, the more I realized
how little I actually know. Linux has caused me to research &
understand all the little intricacies of computing. I would never have
learned what I have up to the present on the M$ platform. The M$
Knowledge Base has got to be one of the most confusing, misleading
so-called info sites around.
Unfortunately, I have to use M$ at my work & I can't count the number
of wasted hours trying to find out something from M$ whereas if I need
to find out something in Linux, the longest time I can recall looking
for something until I found it was something like 15 -20 minutes -
usually it's within the 5 -10 minute range.
Needless to say, my home box is Linux - Debian's Etch & it does
everything I want it to.
XP, Vista, no thanks.
