Does anyone have any idea as to weather Linux Debian or Linspire
would work with an
IBM Intellistation M Pro DUAL P4 Xeon?
I suppose it work fine as IBM sells it with RHEL installed.
I would suggest you use Debian rather than linspire.
Well, does Red Hat have special drivers for the VIDEO?
RedHat uses the default Xorg drivers, so if you want to use hardware
accelerated OpengGL, then you will need to download the driver from
nVidia
manually and install.
Also, does it tend to have the ports on the back
like a normal PC (like parallel)? Here are the specs again:
I have only seen a far away photo of the backside, it looks like it
has one
parallel port, but parallel and serial ports are on their way out, as
you can
use USB devices, even "serial USB" connections seems to be possible
nowadays.

I will assume it has ps/2 ports, logical?
Check upi at the IBM site and see what ports they list it to have.
Linspire is Debian based so I wondered why your preference.
Linspire has got quite bad criticism, not working that well and so on. The
52:nd place on the distrowatch.com list should show how interested people are
about Linspire.
Will this machine function normally in a basic mode if I do NOT mess
with the optimal drivers??
You get the optimal driver by default, as there is one driver that will work
with each part, the only thing that won't get all features by default to is
the graphics card, you need to install the closed source nVidia driver. How to
do that you find at the forums for Debian.
I have no knowledge of the command line.
It's quite easy, if you don't try you never learn.
My favorite is Linspire 5.0. It's easier than M$ Windoz! Anyway, I don't
want to buy Red Hat. So are other distributions likely to work??
If you want to use RedHat without buying, you have two options, using Fedora
Core, which is the development version of RedHat, it's free and has the latest
features. The other option is to use CentOS, which uses the source RPMs for
RedHat EL, the major difference is that CentOS don't have the 3rd party
programs that are included in RedHat EL.
Draw back with Fedora/CentOS is that they don't include "fishy" licenses like
mp3-codecs, you will need to install such yourself.
Ubuntu may be a easier option than Debian, or if you want to have more command
over your installation, then you have SourceMage (if you want to stay in the
Debian family).
