Hello everybody,
Just wondering if you know if laptops exist that can both run Linux
and support terminals with ultra-high resolution (specifically, a DELL
3007WFP which can go up to 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz).
If it uses nVidia or ATi graphics cards, then you can use the closed source
driver to get support for max resolution in Xorg, for consoll you vill most
likely only be able to use the VESA driver and I think that is hitting a limit
at 1280x1024.

Well, but what is that maximum resolution? So far, I've only seen
desktop graphics cards that support 2560x1600. Does appropriate laptop
technology even exist? I am not sure at this point...

If you mean console with terminal, then it's 1280x1024, specially with the
older VESA driver (think you get more out of VESA-ng, but don't work on the
64bit x86 CPUs).

If you mean X Windows System with terminal, then it depends on the graphics
chip that is used on the laptop, you have best options if it's based on ATi
from AMD or nVidia from nVidia, as you have the closed source drivers (you can
download those from their home pages), no matter if you have a dekstop or
laptop, as long as your graphics card is supported by the driver, you will get
the same resolution, which will be the same as the graphics cards maximum
resolution.

So if it's a supported nVidia card, then with the nVidia driver you will get
2560x1600, if the card isn't supported, then you are most likely stuck with
VESA driver which I think don't support much more than 1280x1024.
Keep in mind that the nVidia driver only works with the X Windows System.
