My $20 (inflation you know). All controllerless modems are junk, period.
It does not matter if they "Work Great". They offload more work on one's
processor and so are junk. Anything that makes my processor work harder
than it should have to, thus taking away processing cycles from my
applications, is crap. It does not matter if the piece of garbage was
included with my laptop as it is still trash. I am not interested in
devloving this into a debate over "yeah, but faster processors blah blah
blah".

All my processor cycles are belong to me. :)

As one previous poster said get a PCMCIA modem with a real controller and
be done with the problem. For anyone interested Zoom still makes them:
