You're wrong about that.
Chris, did you or did you not post:
"Firstly, if you have any kind of American educational certification,
it's /worthless/ in the rest of the world, so it's a long way below mine. "
I challenge you to show me where I'm 'wrong about that" when I say you make "sweeping statements and generalizations" when this very statement (that includes the words "any kind of American educational certification") was the start of your post! You may be backtracking on it now, but my point is that until someone calls you on it, you like to make statements like this. In America, we call that 'hyperbole'. I'm certain your superior academic credentials enable you to grasp the meaning of that word. I've told people a MILLION times not to stoop to hyperbole.
And as I recall, you and some other posters to this thread virtually chased the poster 'wiredwiki' off usenet with your
mean-spirited responses when he plugged his iTunes linux podcast ...
which seemed innocent enough, especially since it appeared he was making
a legitimate attempt to help linux noobs; the very purpose for which
this group exists (or should exist).
Nope - he was trying to make money from information that's freely available
to anyone that can be bothered to type "Google" into a browser.
(for those of you interested in how this part of the debate got started, check out the thread "Are you new to Linux and need a starting point" by wiredkiwi)
I actually listened to some of his podcast only to see what everyone was so pissed off about. Didn't have the time or patience to go to the end. So I'll ask you ... what was he trying to make money on? And where was the pitch? If you tell me that you listened to it (till the end!) and he was selling, I'll echo your sentiments about his post. If you didn't, you (and others) were just plain mean bullies. So which is it?
And your assertion that American educational certificates are worthless
in the rest of the world will be a big surprise to the thousands of
foreign students at MIT, Stanford
Those, and Yale and Harvard are credible. The rest are somewhat less so.
Thanks for proving my point about your 'sweeping statements'. Upon what credible evidence do you base the claim that ALL other American educational institutions except the four named are inferior? Or do you just mean 'some' ... or "a few". If so, perhaps that's what you should say instead of 'the rest'.
But that's no reason for you to attack all the posters on Usenet that were educated in
America.
I'm not sure that I did, but if that's your interpretation of my posting, I
apologise. I was /almost/ /certainly/ in "rant" mode at the time, but I
don't bother to archive the fleeting musings of Usenet.
Don't take my word for it, go back and read your own post, then tell me conclusion you expected me (and other American graduates) to draw from your statement. And I'm not asking you to archive the fleeting musings of Usenet, just pay attention to your own posts.
Maybe posters on this group ought to think of what you would say if you were standing with the others in a group, face to face ...
sometimes harsh words are called for, but they should be directed at the
appropriate person(s), not simply thrown out there to insult everyone
and anyone just to make yourself more important.
*I* *am* important - certainly to /me/ and my wife, friends and family. I'm
not in the business of self-aggrandisement, however!
Regards
C.
I'll draw your attention not to your reply above, but to my original point ... that you would almost never sport such an attitude if you were standing with the other posters face to face and speaking with them directly. That's not directed entirely at you, but you did provide the best example for me to quote ... and considering Dan C's rantings in this thread, that's a dubious honor.
I used to get annoyed when posts went wildly off topic, but since I'm now as guilty as the rest, I guess I'll post more liberally in the future. I've been reading Linux newsgroups for many years, and posting somewhat less. I'm not a computer professional ... in fact, my job has no connection to computers or Linux whatsoever. I'm here to find out how stuff works with Linux. But when I see some of the outrageous statements made in this group, it's tough to let them go unchallenged.
Rich
