Re: Distro Poll, what do you use?

Never said it did ...

I consider it that you imply, and expect still, it does preclude my behaviour.

but I wanted to point out that your previously
excellent post was very sensible, and the way you treated wiredkiwi was
not consistent with it.

My remarks to OP were sensible, measured and permitted him opportunity to
clarify. Also, that singular post from which we have continued far longer to
discuss that I desire now, is consistent with that laudable message due given
his dubious post. Furthermore, that wonderful post, "Something newbies should
know", has *nothing* do with OP's post. It has _everything_ to do with being
patient and gentle on newbies trying to learn and use Linux. Shall I quote? OK,
here you go: http://www.webservertalk.com/message1901885.html

<snip>
Never met anyone from a newsgroup to my knowledge but I'd like to.
And sir, you seem to be the only objector, besides OP, to the way I
framed that statement.

In fact, I seem to be the only one objecting to anything at all! That's
a problem too, I think. But hopefully, my post will encourage some
others to come forward when they see something they think is out of
line. Or maybe not, and I'll eventually give up too.

I'm hearing the chirp of crickets ...

<snip>
But my point is that several of you literally chased the guy off the group.

Doesn't disturb me. No one used physical force. wiredwiki is welcome to return
anytime he desires and continue as he has, or improve his approach, even become
a useful poster - like sharing his wonderful insights on Linux. However, the
suspicion he's a spammer, etc., plus his unending re-posting of the same message
is being greeted with the same love he felt here in other places:
http://tinyurl.com/2rduq4
<snip>

The fact that it doesn't disturb you is part of the problem, sk8r. I
won't say that his 'unending re-posting' of the same message doesn't
deserve a firm word, though that wasn't the basis for your flame in the
original post. But the kind of bullying to which he was subjected rarely
bothers the bully.

I put out a one line reply about OP which allowed for him to clarify.

"Right you are Dan C. Another fraud ... wouldn't be surprized if Mr. iTunes guy
is selling something."

Following that I said,

"Hey you fringe Linux wannabe users - do please try Linux!
- you don't need some podcast. Just do a little free reading at you local
library, web search it or visit one of these few among many web sites (in no
special order):

http://www.debian.org/doc/
http://www.linuxcommand.org/
http://tldp.org/
http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz "

That doesn't even come close to a definition of bullying. Beginning
to think you a sort of bully what with this needless hammering away
about my evil remark and OP's wonders. Are you OP using another name?

Man, you're making glue!

Some posts are obvious spam; this one was in a gray
(grey, for non-Americans) area. I felt the reaction was inappropriate
and decided to say so in that thread.

.... glue.

<snip>

My point here is that as a poster, you can decide to be mean first and
ask questions later (or in this case, don't bother to ask questions at
all), or you can help guide noobs to this group with firm yet polite
guidance.

[quoting myself from above]

My remarks to OP were sensible, measured and permitted him opportunity to
clarify. "Something newbies should know", has *nothing* do with OP's post. It
has _everything_ to do with being patient and gentle on newbies trying to learn
and use Linux.

[/quote]

.... you've got a bucket of glue now.

Sure, he obviously didn't read the FAQ if he cross posted like
a madman and deserves some of the blame. But again, that wasn't the
basis of all the flames. I can't tell you which to do, just please
consider the latter and make Usenet at least a little more civili(s)ed.

[being outrageous]

GAWD, I'm happy your weren't about while Churchill sought to oppose Hitler.
You'd argue Hitler just needs to be better understood and we should be more
gentle and patient with him. We shouldn't say anything that might even smell of
a doubt towards little Adolf and his promises. Just show him a FAQ and be quiet!
