Re: Distro Poll, what do you use? [so far OT that it scrolls]

I am serious but not being unkind. I see you use TB on MS NT5 and read elsewhere
that you're impressed with Ubuntu, so I thought it a kind offer to help *should*
you switch (including dual booting - the voices said I can mention that now).

Fine ... a generous offer, thank you. In fact I have 10 machines running, most of which are PIII's in the 500Mhz-1Ghz range, so I've never tried the 'dual booting' route. I should, just to see if I can do it! My 'main' machine is still a WinXP, dual core P4. I originally switched from Mac to Win in 2000 because to take programming courses at the local community college's continuing ed program, it had to be Windows. Subsequently took Visual Basic (not cause I wanted to, it was a prerequisite dictated by the school), 2 classes in procedural C, one class in programming Windows with C, a couple OO C++ courses; when the Windows with C++ (using MFC) came up, only me and 2 other nerds signed up and the school canceled the class. Don't do too much C or C++, but it sharpened my skills enough to help with Perl. Regardless, 5 of the machines run one of the Fedora Core or Fedora 7 OS's. This is so I can bork up a machine and still have an example to get it right, plus try out new distros like Ubuntu. My 'production' website (actually a lightly used website I built for my college graduating class) is the only one I don't fiddle with too much. Since it's on an older Fedora, I'm looking to migrate it; but I foolishly used a lot of 'absolute' address references in the original, plus I have to make sure I get the security certs right. Maybe I'll be asking you for advice on Sed, so I can hunt down all the refs in the various HTML pages (actually, every page is generated by a perl script, but you know what I mean) and change them all at once. I bought a book on it, like usual, so that's a start.

Read it is to improve soon with some carrier - SW? - signing a
contact. What's you line of employment?

Though my undergraduate degree was in Electrical Engineering, I've been a professional pilot for about 20 years; first as a C-130 SAR pilot with the US Coast Guard, then as a Boeing 737 pilot with an airline that I won't name, but it's named for our 49th State :). I'll note for Chris's sake that this clue will preclude some American High School students from figuring out what it is. This type of employment does allow me to travel by air more easily (and cheaply) as long as their is space available, which is getting rare these days.

Consider joining Chris and I when he visits the Seattle area ...

Wish it were possible - HVAC/R supermarket/mini-mart/restaurant technicians are
rarely available for travel in my region during this season.

Nonetheless, your welcome to join then, or perhaps stop by at a later time. If I find myself in Casper (or with an opportunity to get there), I'll keep the Old Chicago in mind. Bellevue,WA's 'Tap House Grill' has over 160 beers on tap though, and I've never seen anyone there drinking Corona or Bud.
