Dan C., I decided to cease using leafnode after considering your point re:
direct news server and DSL connection. It's not needed in my situation.
If your NNTP does not provide for use of things like XPAT then leafnode<snip>
still gives you more control.
Yo SINNER! My ISP doesn't do XPAT. I'll keep an eye on the junk and see if it
matters. Kept the config files for leafnode - just in case. Thanks for the
mention. Here are my current general filters in News/score:
[*]
Score: =-9999
Xref: advocacy
Xref: windows
Xref: conspiracy
Xref: flame
Xref: kook
Xref: microsoft
Xref: politics
Xref: windows
Some that I've found useful:
Xref: \<alt\.religion\.jehovahs-witn
Xref: \<rec\.ponds[^.]
Xref: \<soc\.culture\.jewish
Xref: \<soc\.singles
Xref: wrestling
Seems to be keeping things reasonably "quiet" so far. I did score against Mi5,
tho'.
Do you know how to set system-wide filters on slrn?
You could call a scorefile from /etc/news/slrn.rc (or wherever it's
located), but there would be nothing to stop users overriding it or
disabling filtering altogether, e.g. by using "k" in group mode.
And, also number of
cross-posts permitted to be seen (for controlling spammers like Mi5)?
Match two or more groups:
Xref: :[^:]:
Three or more groups:
Xref: :[^:]:[^:]:
Four or more groups:
Xref: :[^:]:[^:]:[^:]:
etc.
Lastly,
just in case, can slrn control line size? I typically block more than 400 lines.
Score: =-9999
Lines: 400
However, the Lines header may be absent or incorrect, so you could
consider scoring on Bytes: instead.
