re: direct news server and DSL connection. It's not needed in my
situation. It's one less service to have running. I set up the ~/.slrnrc
to filter out the unwanted groups. Plus, made my son's hidden .slrnrc
additionally filter certain key words, subjects, authors, etc. that I
wish to block. So, I'm no longer running that server (a very nicely
designed one tho' - leafnode that is) or additional crontabs for more
frequent pulls. Thanks for mentioning that.
Sounds like a good plan.
I'm working on a means to filter system-wide with root owning the
file... that'll keep things clean even when he learns to circumvent his
RC file.
Hmmm.... I see others have made some suggestions, and I'm not sure what
else could be done. Perhaps make the .slrnrc file in your son's home
directory to be owned by root, so he couldn't edit it? Not sure if that
would prevent it being read when he starts up slrn, but I would think it
should work. Good luck.

"Bother!" said Pooh, as he rm -rf'd leafnode.
