first start with a rpm version of linux
i would start with opensuse or mandriva being the most user friendly
go here for opensuse

or start with a live cd version IE you can boot os off the cd and not
install it to see if you like it
ubuntu, slackware or knoppix even opensuse
the rest yopu can work out
