Re: Where the F**K do I begin?

Which fits? The idea is for everyone to use whatever they like. There
are small distros, there are large distros, firewall distros,
server distros, desktop distros, education oriented distros, distros
with games....

The idea is to have a choice. You're not bound by anyone.

I thought Linux was
Linux.

You thought wrong. Linux is just a kernel, not the entire distribution
of all utilities and applications.

BTW, windows aren't just windows either. You've got home, pro, small
buisness, premium...

Then I see that to download I need bit-torrent or emule.

For some of them. It keeps the cost of bandwidth for servers down.

There are numerous text files, and finally a 700 meg file
with an .iso extension. I assume from the size that the .ISO is the
actual OS, but what the f**k is a .ISO file?

ISO file is a cd/dvd image. Never burned anything? In future for such
things visit a site I like to call google - http://www.google.com

Just for grins I clicked
on that ISO file, and was told that the download would take about 4
and a half days on my dialup connection.

Wouldn't it be easier to just order the cds? Can't blame Linux for your
slow connection.

I heard Linux
was complicated and was really only for the ultimate class of computer
geeks, which I am not.

It's not, but it has somewhat steeper initial learning curve. But after
that all is song and dance.

With windows, on the other hand, you have gentler learning curve but
everything after that is a nightmare to do (especially now when they've
said to autopatcher to close down). This way you've got masses that
know only how to click an icon and that's pretty much it. In 90% of
cases they're lost when you rearrange the icons or reduce the size of
maximized Word window. Change a few colors and you need to retrain
people. Sad, really.

However, I do have 18 years of computer use
under my belt, so I thought I could at least install the friggin thing
and take a look at it. But hey, if it takes a geek diploma just to
download the damn thing, I think I'll pass.

I'm constantly amazed by people like you. Let's review your situation:

- you *** in your pants when given a option (talk about not using
brain cells)
- you don't know what an ISO image is (yes, that's pretty unusual
these days)
- think it's linux's blame for your slow net connection (try
downloading Vista's SP1 - 1GB in size - over a dial-up when it
get public).

Now you're saying you need a "geek diploma" to install the thing - and
you haven't even _downloaded_ the install? Truly moronic.

Maybe someone can post a few .jpg pictures of their linux screens,
because I think that is the closest I will ever get to it, and at
least I can see what it looks like without hours of torture. I'm not
posting this to bash Linux, just stating the truth.

How can you bash Linux when you haven't even seen it?

I don't know much
about it, but from what I saw on their site, if Linux ever wants to
gain popularity they will need to get ONE version, not 20 or 30, and
upgrade that one version the same way that MS does every few years
with patches in between. They also need to make their website so that
anyone can make sense of the site itself.

No, we need _more_ Linux versions. We still have to make one for you.

OK, I know someone is going to tell me to buy it on CD. Well, if the
price was the cost of a blank CD, plus actual shipping I might
consider it. but I would not pay more just to "look at it", and likely
never use it again, "IF' and "ONLY IF" I could even install the damn
thing.

You can order if for _free_ (postage=0 in any currency). Just visit
ubuntu's site.

Like what the hell does one do with a .ISO file anyhow?

One usually burns it to a CD as image, but some get in the "stupid" mode
and burn it as a file.

Go ahead, post photos..... That's all I need.....

If you still wish to dl something small try this:
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html

Othewise check this out:
http://www.ubuntu.com/

Surf the site and find where to order a free CD (or 5, which is cheaper
for Canonical). If you can't find it stick with windows.

What a strange game.
The only winning move is not to play.

How about a nice game of chess?
