OK, I know someone is going to tell me to buy it on CD. Well, if the
price was the cost of a blank CD, plus actual shipping I might consider
it.
Not far off. There are people who specialise in just that sort of
thing:

Just found a useful list on the Knoppix site:
http://knopper.net/knoppix-vendors/index-en.php

Knoppix is a try-before-you-install Live CD. There are also Live CDs for
other disributions as well.

Since different systems concentrate on different desktop environments you
might want to try more than one:
Knoppix or Kubuntu for KDE
Ubuntu or Gnoppix for Gnome
Elive or Luit or BumpTop for unusual desktop ideas
dyne:bolic for multimedia
GamesKnoppix or Morphix for games
KnoppMyth for a TV/video recorder if you are a massochist

If you just want a painless start, pick from one of:
Mandriva, Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora

All software can be installed on all systems, one way or another. The
main difference between distros is:
The package manager used (update and install software)
The system manager used (set up networking, users etc)
The default desktop used
The hardware detection at install time.
Have a read round the reviews and magazines, see what you fancy
